Notes

Gasp. I know, I know–my calorie consumption today is horrifying. But I can’t help it–I’m always ravenous after a good surf session. It doesn’t help that all my surf buddies have healthy appetites that are made even healthier by a day spent riding the waves.

Breakfast was eaten at the Burger King at the Shell Station along NLEX, where the surf crew agreed to meet at 4:30 this morning. I tried to pick the healthiest option from the BK menu, and I think I succeeded with the chicken tenders. The onion rings and hash browns, however–well let’s just say the aroma of the piping hot onion rings and the freshly fried hash browns were too much for me to resist.

Lunch was a definite improvement–the place where we stayed at in Zambales today had a carinderia with a lot of vegetable dishes for sale. I was ecstatic when I saw that they had seaweed–I used to eat this a lot back when I was still assigned in Visayas.

Dinner was the worst performance of all–although it was delicious. We ate at Xtremely Xpresso, a restaurant in Subic Bay that serves Italian food. Their Big Ben pizza is the BEST–it’s seriously one of the most delicious pizzas I’ve ever tasted. Their Yakult gelato was a winner, too. I mean, I love Yakult on its own and it’s one of my favorite drinks on earth (plus it helped get rid of my lactose intolerance), but to actually use it to make gelato? That was genius. If I hadn’t eaten that extra slice of pizza, I would have had another cup–or even two.

All in all, the less-than-stellar food choices are the result of poor planning and preparation on my part. I know from experience that these surf trips with my friends aren’t really conducive to healthy eating; and on top of that my friends, although they’re cool and I love them to bits, aren’t conscious of their nutrition. That being said, I’m stoked about discovering Xtremely Xpresso. The food is amazingly good and the prices are reasonable. I’m definitely going back there the next time I’m in Subic–granting that I behaved myself foodwise, of course. :)
